Life with kids didn’t turn out to be quite as simple as we first dreamed. Week days, weeknights and weekends became completely changed in ways that we never imagined. So for those of you who wonder how people like us spend our weeknights, I thought I’d give you a little peek into our exotic schedule with “Five Things To Do on a Tuesday Night.”
1 – Make dinner. Or eat leftovers. The only real rule is that any visible green is in the salad, not on the meat or gravy. I’m pretty paranoid about food going bad, so I vigilantly (and maybe ridiculously) protect our tender tummies from spoiled food. Perhaps we’ve thrown away some perfectly good, well-preserved deli meat; but we have not gotten sick yet from home food poisoning. You’re welcome, my sweet family, you’re welcome.
2 – Pay the bills. This can be quite the trick. I have to write the outgoing checks while still maintaining enough money in the bank account to cover braces, sports fees, socks and school tuition. Also, my FabFitFun subscription is pretty important to me… Oh, and our Universal Yums subscription – I mean, it’s for family togetherness after all!
3 – Referee. With five people in the family, we have so very many opinions. And with five people in the family, all of the opinions are loud and strong. Because only the strong survive. And the kids are winning. Note to self: Set up an Amazon multi-vitamin subscription for the parents.
4 – Play Beauty School. Sometimes this means braiding hair for next day curls. Other times this means shaving our son’s head so he doesn’t look like the beggar child he may end up being if I don’t get number two under control.
5 – Share the love. This covers everything from combing the pantry for donations to the school’s canned food drive, to hugging my kiddos while simultaneously explaining that I am “off duty” until tomorrow at 645am. These are the things that can feel stressful and exhausting, yet still fill my heart with joy and cozy feelings. These are the things that make it possible to do it all over again on Wednesday night. These are the things that make this life worth doing, period. These are the things that remind me that even a crazy Tuesday night is an opportunity to make our world a slightly kinder place to live.
Wishing you sweet Tuesday nights with a hint of beautiful chaos.
